1.  Introduction

TalaTherapy (“the App”) is an Indian classical rhythm practice and therapy application developed by Graysage Apps (“we”, “us”, or “our”). The App is designed for learning, practising, and experiencing Carnatic talas through interactive exercises, sollukettu recitation, and optional real-instrument microphone input.

 

This Privacy Policy explains what information the App may collect, how it is used, and your rights in relation to that information. By installing or using TalaTherapy you agree to the practices described in this policy.

2.  Information We Collect

2.1  Information You Provide

TalaTherapy does not require you to create an account or provide any personal information such as your name, email address, or date of birth. The App operates entirely without user registration.

2.2  Microphone Audio

The App requests permission to access your device’s microphone only when you enable “Real Instrument” mode or the “Real Drum Playing” feature. When this mode is active:

• The microphone captures audio solely to detect percussion sounds or hand-tala gestures in real time.

• Audio is processed locally on your device. It is never transmitted to any server, stored to disk, or shared with any third party.

• Microphone access is immediately suspended when you exit Real Instrument mode, navigate away from the practice screen, or close the App.

• The microphone is never activated at app launch or during normal tala practice without your explicit action.

 

We do not record, retain, or analyse the content of any audio captured through the microphone beyond the immediate real-time detection task described above.

2.3  Locally Stored Preferences

The App saves the following information to your device’s local storage (SharedPreferences) to preserve your settings between sessions:

• Last selected tala, tempo (BPM), kala setting, and input mode.

• Microphone calibration profiles (spectral feature summaries, not raw audio).

• Custom tala definitions you create in the Tala Detection screen.

• App tuning parameters (sensitivity, refractory period, noise floor).

 

This data is stored only on your device. It is not transmitted to us or any third party and is deleted if you uninstall the App or clear the App’s data from your device settings.

2.4  No Analytics or Tracking

TalaTherapy does not integrate any third-party analytics SDK, advertising SDK, crash reporting service, or user-tracking library. We do not collect usage statistics, session logs, device identifiers, or behavioural data of any kind.

3.  How We Use Information

The limited information described above is used exclusively to:

• Operate the core features of the App (tala practice, zone detection, sollukettu playback).

• Restore your preferences when you reopen the App.

• Calibrate the microphone onset detector to your specific device and playing surface.

 

We do not use any information for advertising, profiling, or any purpose beyond the immediate functionality of the App.

4.  Data Sharing and Disclosure

We do not sell, rent, trade, or otherwise disclose your information to any third party. Because TalaTherapy does not collect personal data or transmit any data off-device, there is no personal information for us to share.

 

We may be required to disclose information if compelled by applicable law, regulation, or a valid legal process. Since we do not retain any personal data, we would have no personal data to disclose in such circumstances.

5.  App Permissions

TalaTherapy requests the following Android permissions:

 

RECORD_AUDIO  —  Required for Real Instrument mode and microphone calibration. The microphone is activated only on your explicit request. Audio is processed locally and never stored or transmitted.

VIBRATE  —  Used to provide optional haptic feedback on beat events. No data is collected.

6.  Children’s Privacy

TalaTherapy is a general-audience music education and therapy application suitable for all ages. The App does not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13 (or the applicable age of digital consent in your jurisdiction). Because the App collects no personal information from any user, it presents no specific risk to children’s privacy.

 

If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided personal information through the App, please contact us using the details in Section 9 and we will promptly address your concern.

7.  Data Security

Because TalaTherapy does not transmit any data off-device, the risk of data interception or unauthorised access during transmission does not apply. Data stored locally on your device (calibration profiles, preferences) is protected by the Android system’s application sandboxing model, which prevents other apps from accessing it without root-level access.

 

We encourage you to keep your device’s operating system up to date and to use a screen lock to protect all apps and data on your device.

8.  Your Rights and Choices

8.1  Revoking Microphone Permission

You may revoke the RECORD_AUDIO permission at any time through your device’s Settings → Apps → TalaTherapy → Permissions. Revoking this permission disables Real Instrument mode but does not affect any other feature of the App.

8.2  Clearing Local Data

You may delete all locally stored preferences and calibration data by going to Settings → Apps → TalaTherapy → Storage → Clear Data on your Android device. This resets the App to its default state.

8.3  Uninstalling the App

Uninstalling TalaTherapy removes all locally stored data associated with the App from your device.

8.4  GDPR and Regional Rights

If you are located in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or another jurisdiction with comprehensive data protection legislation, you may have additional rights including the right to access, rectify, or erase personal data held about you. Since TalaTherapy does not collect or retain personal data, these rights are satisfied by the architecture of the App itself. If you have a specific concern, please contact us and we will respond within 30 days.

9.  Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the App’s features or applicable legal requirements. When we make material changes, we will update the effective date at the top of this document and, where feasible, provide notice through the App or its Play Store listing.

 

We encourage you to review this Policy periodically. Continued use of the App after any change constitutes your acceptance of the revised Policy.
